Abstract

This chapter deals with video distribution systems, digital signage systems, and IPTV systems in building systems. The best example of enterprise video distribution is cable television where a service provider is distributing video programming to its customers. Within a building the video distribution network is distributing video and informational content. The content may be re-broadcast content from a cable television company but may also be advertisements, public safety information, archived educational programs, live video feeds, entertainment, and energy information. A typical deployment of video distribution in a smart building involves: digital television transmitted over a TCP/IP-based data network; digital video distribution that transmits and receives MPEG video streams; distribution and transmission of digital video in a broadcast, multicast or unicast mode; a media retrieval system, allowing authorized users to schedule and stream video programming on demand; management and reporting system; and inputs to the digital video distribution system. Digital signage is an application on IPTV systems that broadcasts content to a viewer (as opposed to static signs). Basic components of a digital signage system include displays, media processor and controller, management workstation, and content.
