Abstract

This chapter deals with data networks in smart buildings. The basic data networking technology infrastructure comprises the technical core of a smart building. The basic infrastructure of data networks, including standard cable infrastructure, using the IP network protocol, and interoperable databases, is open and standardized. Data networks are used to share resources and exchange information between network users and other networks. Decades ago data networks consisted of mainframes, minicomputers and proprietary networking infrastructure and communications protocols. Today most networks consist primarily of switches, servers, industry-standard operating systems, network and client software applications, peripheral devices, and user devices. Users typically use desktop or notebook forms of personal computers to connect to a data network, although some of the basic PC applications are now accessible with smart cell phones. The network connectivity of the PC user to the network is either structured cable or a wireless access point. Remote connectivity to the network is typically provided through a telecommunications service provider via a cable modem, DSL, T-1 lines, or higher-capacity telecommunications services.
