Abstract

In this chapter, solar energy systems and smart grid structures are mentioned. Smart grids are used to control the distribution grids of renewable energy sources and to use the harvested energy efficiently. Smart grid structures, in comparison with conventional grid structures and microgrid structures, are described in this chapter. The integration of solar systems into the smart grid and the contribution of solar systems to the grid structure when used with energy storage units are explained. Single-stage and dual-stage converter structures are used in solar energy systems. There are isolation and leakage currents in single-stage solar inverter structures due to the nature of the converter. Three-phase full bridge, three-phase full bridge with split capacitor, and three-phase neutral-point-clamped inverter topologies, and their comparison is described in this chapter. In addition, the control methods of sinusoidal pulse width modulation (PWM), hysteresis band PWM, and space vector PWM used in these inverter structures are described.
