Abstract

This chapter first illustrates some fundamental concepts, such as limit state and limit analysis, kinematically admissible velocity field and statically admissible stress field, then describes the principle of virtual work-rate and the principle of limit analysis. Based on these concepts and principles, the bound theorems are established with illustrative examples to show their applications, such as a notched plate subjected to bending moment, indentation of a die into a semiinfinite rigid plastic medium, extrusion of a metal blank through a symmetrical wedged die, an obtuse wedge under unilateral compression, and a tapered cantilever beam subjected to a transverse load at its free end.
