Abstract

The previous chapters all deal with “static” plasticity problems, while this chapter briefly introduces dynamic plasticity. The propagation of elastic and elastic–plastic stress waves is first elaborated on, followed by descriptions of the dynamic characteristics of materials under high strain rate, as well as a widely adopted dynamic testing technology called the split Hopkinson bar. Then, the dynamic response of a rigid perfectly plastic beam under certain assumptions is discussed with illustrative examples. Finally, the effects of loading speed on the energy absorption performance of structures are illustrated.
