Abstract

This chapter discusses minimally invasive surgical techniques to achieve sacroiliac joint (SIJ) fusion. SIJ fusion is an increasingly common procedure that addresses SIJ joint dysfunction caused by excessive motion, inflammation, or other violations of the SIJ capsule. The methods of SIJ fusion described stabilize the SIJ by placing screws from a lateral approach across the SIJ to immediately fix the joint in place and facilitate fusion through the placement of bone graft. Diagnostic criteria for appropriate surgical candidates for SIJ fusion are outlined. We describe a method of fixation using a screw-based system (L&K Biomed) in which multiple hollow screws are placed across the SIJ followed by insertion of bone graft. We also describe a novel system of SIJ fusion in which a central screw is placed across the SIJ with subsequent insertion of two attached side screws.
