Abstract
Forward osmosis (FO) has wide application in the field of water treatment. FO has shown efficacy in the removal of heavy metals, dissolved organics, microbial content, salinity, and micropollutants. This chapter elucidates the basic concept of FO along with various applications. FO can be applied to both industrial wastewater and surface water treatment. The materials and dimensions of the membrane largely affect the membrane performance. In this chapter, a composite membrane and various hybrid membrane configurations are discussed.
