Abstract

The principles and processes of biotechnology have been well exploited to gain commercial benefits, especially in the areas of pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food and enzyme production. Bioleaching is a technological advancement encompassing the use of microorganisms in metal recovery and reuse. Bioleaching has been shown to depend on a number of factors which include the type of microorganisms, characteristics of the mineral ore, physicochemical parameters and operating conditions. Moreover, the characteristics of the mineral ores and their processing technique also play a significant role in altering the bioleaching efficiency. This chapter aims to elaborate upon the varied factors and their influence in the process of bioleaching, which is essential information in an endeavour to create an optimised process of metal recovery and reuse.
