Abstract
The major concern in case of mining is the overburden of the mining leachate which often enters into the nearby water system and creates environmental hazards. Acid mine drainage released from active and closed mines contains a huge amount of metal and sulfate, creating problems for storage and extraction in long-term mining operations. Hence competitive methods and advanced techniques need to be developed for enhanced recovery and recycling of metal values that remains in the discarded mining waste, thereby adding recycling values to the economy. This chapter aims to explain the various issues pertaining to conventional methods and tries to justify the cost-effectiveness of biomining processes.
