Abstract

In the twenty-first century, the single biggest obstacle to petroleum exploration and production is the outdated turbidite concepts and related sequence-stratigraphic templates. The true insights into deepwater sedimentation would be achieved only if we could (1) abandon the outdated turbidite models, (2) adopt new perspectives involving SMTDs and BCRS, and (3) acknowledge that the rocks are the sole means of accurate process interpretation. My prediction is that during the next few decades, the empirical data will compel the petroleum industry to adopt new perspectives of SMTDs and BCRS. As a consequence, the conventional turbidite concepts will diminish or even extinct by the year 2050.
