Abstract
Disturbances of sodium and water are among the commonest derangements encountered in hospitalised patients, especially in paediatric patients, due to the prevalence of diseases associated with dehydration. A small proportion of patients will have rarer underlying causes, requiring specialised testing, some of which may be time-consuming or impractical to perform due to lack of local resources. Nonetheless, the initial approach to assessing and safely managing these patients is critical and can be easily performed in most centres.
