Abstract

Bone health issues affecting children fall into three broad areas: low bone mass, high bone mass and skeletal dysplasia. It is essential for paediatricians/healthcare workers to have an understanding of these disorders and develop a frame work with which to investigate and manage. Bisphosphonates have dramatically improved the bone health of children with primary bone disorders, especially osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). The number of children with secondary osteoporosis is increasing rapidly as young people with devastating chronic medical conditions survive into childhood, adolescents and adult life. Increasingly, we are drawing on experience gained from the treatment of children with OI to manage children with secondary osteoporosis. Recognition of short stature due to skeletal dysplasia is important so as to avoid unnecessary growth hormone therapy. This chapter provides an overview of paediatric bone health and provides a frame work for their diagnosis and management.
