Abstract

Alginates (salts of alginic acids) are classified as a group of natural biodegradable and biocompatible polymers. Alginates have been served as the widely used biopolymeric group excipients in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields for many years. During past few years, various alginate-based composite particles have already been investigated for the sustained releasing drug delivery. Inorganic materials like montmorillonite (MMT) are being conjugated with alginate matrices to produce alginate–MMT composites for sustained release drug delivery. Conjugation of MMT with alginate matrices to prepare alginate–MMT composites and their applications toward the sustained drug delivery systems have been discussed in the current chapter.
