Abstract

Since last few decades, alginate has been continuously gaining much attention for its contribution as a natural polymer in drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. The reasons behind its popularity are cost-effective extraction procedure, excellent biocompatibility, as well as biodegradability. It is extracted from different varieties of marine algae. Systems made of alginate along with some biomaterials are the key ingredients exploited for the designing of scaffolds in bone tissue regeneration application that exhibits excellent cell proliferation and osteoblast differentiation. These alginate-based scaffolds possess potential in delivering different kinds of drugs and other therapeutic candidates for tissue regeneration applications. The present chapter deals with a comprehensive review of alginate-based scaffolds for the use in drug delivery in tissue engineering. Besides this, different important aspects of the current topic like scaffolds in tissue engineering, scaffold fabrication techniques, background information of alginate, and uses of alginate in tissue engineering are overviewed.
