Abstract

Funding is essential to surgical research, especially translational projects, because they are costly and resource-intensive. Traditionally, surgery has been an underfunded area for scientific research. This phenomenon persists in translational surgical research as well. Funding is typically secured through grants, which are few and thus competitive. Therefore, scientists involved in translational surgical research must be aware of established and potential available funding sources. Additionally, surgeon-scientists must be innovative about choosing funding sources and be meticulous when writing a grant application for research funds. This chapter aims to guide applicants to formulate and submit a successful grant application in light of these challenges by providing lists of funding organizations, tips to consider, and pitfalls to avoid during the application process.
