Abstract

Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) are highly competitive funding award-based programs offered by the National Institute of Health. They encourage the involvement of domestic small businesses in Federal Research/Research and Development with the goal of commercialization. The programs also support Women-Owned Small Business and Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Small Business. Many companies under the SBIR/STTR program have been able to build a strong foundation, enabling some of them to become the leading biotechnology companies in the world, such as KelaHealth, Biopsy Science, and Genzyme Corporation (SIBR-NIH, n.d.).
