Abstract

Airway management is a critical skill for prehospital providers. A sound understanding of the physiology involved, as well as specific techniques, is critical to safe and effective patient care. This chapter discusses the fundamental physiologic concepts of oxygenation and ventilation. It discusses the different methods of assessing and managing a patient’s airway, controversies about advanced airway management in cardiac arrest, and tools to help ensure safety with rapid sequence intubation.
