Abstract

Remote health monitoring is the core component of the e-healthcare, which is considered as a cheap and effective solution to tackle the ever-growing demand for healthcare services. Wireless body area network (WBAN) is the key enabler of remote health monitoring. The chapter aims to provide a comprehensive tutorial on remote health monitoring and WBAN. It points out the subtle differences between telemedicine and remote health monitoring while mentioning the need, benefits, applications, and challenges of the later. The architecture of WBAN and the related details, e.g., WBAN system attributes, components, sensor categories, etc. are covered methodically. Illustrating a general architecture, the position and functioning of WBAN in the remote health monitoring system are articulated precisely. The WBAN communication architecture, including network structure, topologies, network layers, and standards are explained thoroughly. Special attention has been given to the MAC layer, considering its importance in WBAN. Several wireless technologies for WBAN and remote health monitoring are explained. Different UWB based MAC layer protocols and medical radio services are also discussed.
