Abstract
This chapter focuses on the application of Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Internet Control Message Protocol for IPv6 (ICMPv6) is designed to enable hosts and routers that use IPv6 protocols to report errors and forward along other basic status messages. ICMPv6 messages are carried as the payload of IPv6 Protocol Data Unit (PDU); hence, there is no guarantee on their delivery. ICMPv6 will find usage and application in 3G VoIP systems. ICMPv6 also supports Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) enabling a user to manage subnet multicast membership for IPv6. MLD messages are used to determine group membership on a network segment, also known as a link or subnet. As implied, MLD messages are sent as ICMPv6 messages. They are used in the context of multicast communications. ICMPv6 also supports Neighbor Discovery (ND)—a collection of five ICMPv6 messages that manage node-to-node communication on a link. Routers make use of ND to advertise their presence, host configuration parameters, and on-link prefixes; also, they use of ND to inform hosts of a better next-hop address to forward PDU for a specific destination.
