Abstract
The initial workup and management of patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with the sudden onset of a severe headache can literally mean the difference between a good outcome and death. The recognition of the symptoms of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage is crucial for any emergency medicine physician. This chapter outlines the general approach to the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting to the ED with the worst headache of their life. This chapter will explain in detail the diagnostic studies needed to rule in or rule out the diagnosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in the ED as well as the initial management of SAH in those patients in whom SAH is confirmed.
