Abstract
This chapter introduces radio fundamentals including the content of an electromagnetic wave and its propagation through space. The full electromagnetic wave frequency spectrum is outlined and categorized. The concept of modulation is presented with details on amplitude, frequency, and phase modulation. Digital modulation such as BPSK and spread spectrum is discussed. Wireless hardware concepts for transmitters and receivers are explained at the block diagram level. Types of antennas (aerials) are presented next. All of the different kinds of two-way radio services are summarized. The chapter ends with a brief introduction to satellites and radio telescopes. Multiple projects are included.
