Abstract

Disease is usually considered without reference to the social context or the narrative of the body. This chapter explores multiple sclerosis through the lens of the denial of the experience of the body; which is viewed as a modern and gendered issue. The author also envisions different cells of the immune system and the blood–brain barrier through metaphor. Finally, the chapter examines the phenomenon of mast fruiting or the collective action of certain trees and explores how that might be related to the functioning of the immune system.
