Abstract

Protection against metallic corrosion using ionic liquids (ILs) has shown tremendous potential because of their marvelous properties as well as their adsorption on the surfaces of metals. ILs are strong, noble, long-lasting, and environment-friendly materials having the potential to replace the outdated, volatile corrosion protectors. ILs have been effectively employed as corrosion defenders for mild steel and carbon steel, but their function in nonferrous metal corrosion has yet to be determined. This chapter identifies ILs as “green corrosion defenders” for a variety of metals and alloys in electrolytic media (including mild steel, carbon steel, aluminum, copper, and zinc) and provides a brief summary of their features, mechanisms, and uses.
