Abstract
This chapter demonstrates the contribution of digital storage devices to the cost of consumer devices. For consumer applications digital storage is a critical component and the digital storage devices are a significant percentage of the total manufacturing cost of the consumer device. Applications that are becoming standard features in consumer devices include digital video recorders (DVR), digital still and video cameras, GPS location services, and network connectivity. Clever design of storage devices in consumer products provides greater functionality and performance, lower overall end product costs, higher reliability, and lower product footprint. There are many advantages of integration of the storage device and application electronics, such as reduction of BOM cost through reduction of the number of host circuit boards and chips, reduction of manufacturing steps for the host device through assembly in a single circuit board or controller device, and assembly of the host device in highly efficient storage production plants.
