Abstract
Cellulose is an organic molecule and a linear polysaccharide. Cellulose ethers, which are derived by the substitution of the hydrogen atoms of the hydroxyl groups with alkyl groups, are the most promising as corrosion inhibitors. The most investigated as metal corrosion inhibitors are carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, ethyl HEC, and methyl HEC. Their synthesis and physical and chemical properties are highlighted in this chapter. The chapter comprehensively discusses the corrosion inhibition performance of each of the polymers on various substrates and media and the modification approaches that have been adopted to enhance their performances.
