Abstract
Lumbar puncture is a procedure that is frequently performed in the emergency department, most commonly to diagnose meningitis and subarachnoid hemorrhage. It allows measurement of cerebrospinal fluid pressure and collection of fluid for cell count, chemical analysis, and culture. Though it is generally a safe procedure, it presents the risk of minor and major complications and has relative and absolute contraindications.
