Abstract

This chapter discusses the causes of project failures, and their necessary remedies. A project goes wrong when it cannot deliver business objectives and intended business benefits. The principal causes of project failure are: inappropriate project team and no end-user engagement, lack of project management skills, inadequate communication to stakeholders, and inadequate controls and reporting. To resolve these problems a project manager must define the appropriate roadmap and manage the scope so that it fits within it. To be successful, the change needs to be sustained within the business so that it is no longer a part of the project scope, but integrated into business as usual. An active sponsor is needed, as there is really no organizational support for a project and certainly no robust link between the needs of the business and the project being delivered. Stakeholder and project team engagement are also critical to the success of any project.
