Abstract

Under general initial and boundary conditions with general fundamental diagrams, however, we have to resolve to approximate, numerical solutions. Such numerical solution methods are similar to experiments, which can lead to further insights under general conditions. Analytical and numerical simulations supplement each other and can propel their development: numerical solutions of the Riemann problem should be consistent with the analytical ones, and numerical studies on more complicated scenarios can guide the development of theories.
