Abstract
This chapter presents an approximation of the network kinematic wave model. At a time instant, we assume that traffic is steady on a link, and the density is constant at all locations. Then the link demand and supply can be defined from such a link density. With the junction models for the Cell Transmission Model, this leads to a new network traffic flow model. Numerically, such a model is as efficient as the Link Transmission Model, and, thus, more efficient than the Cell Transmission Model. Analytically, the model offers some advantages for solving complicated network traffic flow model, since it comprises ordinary differential equations.
