Abstract

Findings demonstrate the prominence of social media in the lives of US adolescents. Through these sites, adolescents have the opportunity to share and express their emotions. This behavior among adult participants has been shown to enhance positive emotions or dampen negative emotions. Little is known about how adolescents may use social media to regulate their emotions. We present a review of what is known and identify areas for further examination that should contribute to our understanding of how adolescents engage in emotion regulation through social media.
