Abstract

This chapter introduces the conventional characterization methods used in SLM preparation of metal matrix composites, mainly metal powder raw material characterization, microstructure characterization, and mechanical properties characterization. First of all, the most important testing indexes for the powder before forming are particle size distribution, morphology, and element composition. Secondly, the microstructure characterization for SLM parts mainly includes metallographic examination (optical microscope), phase constitution analysis (X-ray powder diffraction), microstructure detection (scanning electron microscope), microstructure analysis (electron backscatter diffraction), submicroscopic structure, or ultrastructure analysis (transmission electron microscope). Finally, the most commonly tested mechanical properties for SLM samples are introduced, including hardness, tensile properties, and compressive properties.
