Abstract

The chapter discusses how to use a Screensaver as a desktop picture or integrate graphical user interface (GUI) elements into shell scripts. Apple's Console application provides a slick interface for accessing a system's log files. These logs, and, in particular, the CrashReporter files are indispensable when troubleshooting problems with Mac OS X. Widgets, introduced in Mac OS X 10.4, are the modern equivalent of System 6's desktop accessories. Apple's Website contains a large database of free third-part widgets available for download. Apple's new PowerBooks have built-in motion sensors to protect against hard drive damage. Virtual network computing (VNC) is a protocol for connecting to remote computers. Mac OS X 10.4 has a VNC server-included standard, but it is hidden within the Apple Remote Desktop software. CocoaGestures makes it possible to assign mouse gestures to any menu operation in a Cocoa-based Mac OS X program. Sogundi makes it possible to develop search shortcuts for Safari. Platypus allows users to quickly put a graphical front-end on their shell scripts.
