Abstract

Apple's Mac OS X operating system is extremely intuitive and user-friendly. The chapter describes the ways in which OS X can be used to perform all sorts of tasks; however, even the most intuitive tasks can sometime become repetitive. Apple has provided some mechanisms that can help before the repetitive stress disorder sets in. The chapter discusses the several ways in which tasks can be automated. Automator is a drag-and-drop automation system initially released with OS X 10.4 (Tiger). AppleScript expands on Automator's capabilities, allowing complete control of the OS X system, including automation of graphical user interface (GUI) events, such as mouse clicks and movements. Because of its similarity to English, AppleScrip is much more intuitive than bash scripting, which relies on the commands and syntax that UNIX gurus have used for decades. The chapter also provides a mixture of reference information, instructional demonstrations, and basic overviews that help in automating Mac.
