Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and led to the risk of about a 2% mortality rate globally. The COVID-19 is caused due to infection with a recently arising zoonotic virus known as the severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The ongoing SARS-CoV-2 viral infection is a global public health concern due to its high person-to-person transmission rate. The risk associated with the SARS-CoV-2 is currently assessed as high for the overall population and very high for susceptible individuals. Comorbid conditions such as older age, male sex, hypertension, respiratory disorders, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes exacerbate the manifestation of COVID-19. As of April 1, 2021, globally, approximately 132 million individuals had been infected, and more than 2.8 million people had died due to SARS-CoV-2 infection.
