Abstract

There have been significant changes in the requirements for pilots’ crew resource management (CRM) training and the assessment of their nontechnical skills, following a review by the European aviation regulator which resulted in revised regulatory provisions in 2015, for implementation in 2016. For example, this has added new topics (e.g., resilience development) to the CRM syllabus and altered some of the requirements for CRM trainers and examiners. The international movement towards evidence-based training (EBT) and a competency-based approach has influenced current provisions and operator activities, especially under the Alternative Training and Qualification Programme. These recent revisions mean that many European operators are in a process of implementing changes to meet the new requirements, and in some cases are also transitioning towards the EBT philosophy and associated practices. This chapter provides a selective perspective on some of the key changes that are being implemented in CRM training and nontechnical skills assessment in Europe, with particular reference to the United Kingdom.
