Abstract
After 30 years of evolution, crew resource management (CRM) can be thought of as a set of skills, an approach to daily flying, and a body of knowledge of applications to specific issues identified in flight operations within airlines and across the industry. Safety management systems (SMS) require a disciplined process to identifying and mitigating hazards and risk within an airline’s operations and assessing the effectiveness of risk mitigation. CRM interfaces with SMS in several ways, from serving as a training intervention strategy for selected hazards to communicating information necessary to safety promotion. CRM training also benefits directly from what an airline learns through its safety monitoring and assurance processes.
