Abstract

The earlier chapters in this book provide important general information needed to anaesthetize animals safely and effectively. After having read these chapters and having considered the various aspects of the anaesthetic process, the final factor to consider is the species of animal involved. For example, the small body size of rodents can make some procedures difficult or impracticable, the potential risk of physical injury to personnel may increase the need for chemical restraint in nonhuman primates and differences in anatomy and physiology influence the choice of anaesthetic agents for birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.
