Abstract

Whenever laboratory animals are to be anaesthetized, for whatever purpose, it is essential to have a good understanding of the principles of anaesthesia and the equipment that may be needed. This chapter provides important background information on the process of anaesthesia. It explains the preparation and maintenance of the equipment needed when anaesthetizing animals. It includes a description of the use of items such as anaesthetic chambers, endotracheal tubes, breathing systems, and anaesthetic machines. It also explains why implementing best practice in anaesthesia is central to the implementation of the 3Rs.
