Abstract

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is one of the advanced manufacturing techniques in developing products from virtual models to physical models covering all kinds of critical dimensions and intricate shapes. The advantages of 3DP are manufacturing complex models using fast and cost-effective methods and hence it is extremely desirable over conventional manufacturing processes. This technique is used in many industries and academic research centers that it even includes the water pollution control and treatment segment too. Water treatment has become an essential step for the eradication of dyes, heavy metals, oils, pharmaceuticals, and illicit drugs. These pollutants pose an impending threat to the health of humans by causing chronic or acute poisoning. In recent years it has been observed that progresses in research for membrane separation, desalination and water purification applications, usage of membrane in ocean energy application (tidal energy plants) using 3DP are potentially revolutionizing this field. This kind of 3DP technology is used to manufacture membranes of polymers, biopolymers, alloys, metals, and ceramics through Computer Aided Design (CAD) model. This chapter focuses on the types, uses, manufacturing modes, and ability of 3DP membranes for the efficient removal of toxic pollutants from wastewater.
