Abstract

The discharged wastewater from industries having dissolved materials such as heavy metals, hazardous chemicals, and nitrogen compounds is a real threat to the environment. Advanced treatment processes provide a true solution toward achieving separation of the matter which cannot be easily separated by conventional treatment processes. The proposed chapter discusses a compendium of such processes. The chapter focuses on the working principles, challenges, and scope of recent advancement in water treatment technology. Finally, recommendations for improvements and new directions have been discussed. Following wastewater treatment processes have been discussed in this chapter. (i) Suspended solid removal (ii) Adsorption (ii) Ion exchange (iii) Reverse osmosis (iv) Electrodialysis (v) Chemical oxidation processes (vi) Nutrient removal (vii) Moving bed biofilm reactor (viii) Solar desalination.
