Abstract

Search and Rescue is a specialized field of emergency services composed of teams that are specifically trained to find missing or lost persons in remote, wilderness, or even urban settings. Search and Rescue teams can be organized as highly experienced paid teams that respond to frequent calls in large national parks like Yosemite to small volunteer groups that have a very low volume of calls and minimal experience. Emergency Medical Services, Fire Service personnel, and Law Enforcement Officers will frequently be called upon in lieu available SAR teams. Knowing where to start and how to respond can help improve the chances that a missing or lost person will be found, even if a trained SAR team is not immediately available.
