Abstract

This chapter discusses the results of weathering exposure of styrene-butadiene copolymer. Chevron Phillips K-Resin® is a transparent styrene-butadiene copolymer that can be impact modified as well as UV stabilized. K-Resin® copolymers are styrenic copolymers that will yellow and ultimately craze and embrittle with long-term exposure to direct sunlight. K-Resin® polymers are used in many display applications that are often subjected to reduced levels of UV light, by indirect sunlight or fluorescent lighting. With the addition of appropriate UV stabilizers, the estimated life of a K-Resin® part may be extended. In general, K-Resin® can withstand UV exposure for approximately three months before excessive brittleness and yellowing are evident. Modifying K-Resin® with commercially available UV stabilizers can extend the outdoor life of the material for up to eighteen months depending on the stabilizer package used.
