Chapter 5 - Urban overheating—energy, environmental, and heat-health implications

Abstract

Urban heat island increases the urban ambient temperature and rises the magnitude of heat related mortality, while it increases the energy consumption of buildings. In parallel, it is the main siurce of important environmental problems like the increase of the concentration of the ground level ozone. The present chapter reviews and present the current knowledge and data on the impact of urban overheating on the energy consumption of buildings, environmental impact as well as on the impact on heat related mortality and morbidity.
