Abstract

Gas compressor is an essential equipment in gaseous fluid drilling processes. Reciprocating and centrifugal compressors have different characteristics. This chapter describes characteristics of these compressors and selection of compressors on the basis of well conditions in gas drilling. Gas flow rate capacity of compressor is determined based on borehole cleaning for solid and water removal in annulus, involving four-phase flow. Ambient pressure, temperature, and humidity are considered in horsepower calculations for air drilling. Pressure rating of compressor is determined based on borehole stability and flow regime through drill bit. Illustrative examples are provided using the spreadsheet program GasDrill-20.xls provided with this book for performing calculations.
