Abstract
Maize is an important crop worldwide, and with diverse uses its demand remained to be high. Classical maize breeding approaches based on progenies testing followed by selection for complex traits such as yield having low heritability are considered to be slow. Integration of science led innovative molecular breeding (MB), a speed breeding platform seems to be a potential option to speed-up the genetic gain with time, resources, and specific demand. MB has been quite successful for simply inherited traits, whereas potential marker-based approaches, namely, marker-assisted recurrent selection and genomic selection have been developed and integrated to comply with complex traits. Breeders’ friendly orientation of such tools with clear-cut advantages, however, may help accelerated adoption and integration in classical breeding program for speeding-up the product development process. In this chapter, we have discussed various MB tools and their application in grain yield improvement in maize.
