Abstract

This chapter provides an overview on mathematical societies. Societies are often called upon to advice on the problems concerning mathematics that arise in a wide variety of situations. Their influence can be quite considerable, in determining the course of official inquiries into matters affecting all societies, publish a statement of their aims, and purpose and indicate the nature of their membership mathematical education. An analysis of the publications of the major mathematical societies reveals their main areas of activity, namely, (1) meetings—local, national, and international; (2) publications of periodicals, books, monographs, etc; (3) library and information services; (4) educational programs; (5) vocational guidance services; and (6) cooperation with other organized bodies.
