Abstract

This chapter presents a guide to sources of information in the field of statistics. In recent years, there has been a growth in the application of mathematical statistics to physical and biological phenomena and to business management problems by the use of statistical theory in the design of experiments, in quality control and in evaluating the likely result of proposed plans of action. Mathematical statistics is well covered by scientific periodicals, most of which are published by professional societies. Statisticians are fortunate in having the bulk of this literature abstracted for them in the International Journal of Abstracts: Statistical Theory and Method. The applications of statistical techniques are very numerous and have rightly occasioned a substantial amount of literature. Biometrics is the application of statistical methods to the field of biological research and is a subject that has seen a rapid growth in recent years. One of the best books on statistical methods in biology is Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher's Statistical Methods for Research Workers, published by Oliver & Boyd. The chapter further discusses the special application of the subject in the study of genetics and in agriculture.
