Abstract
Compounds with divalent sulphur functional groups attached to a benzene ring are significant in in several contexts, both in organic and inorganic chemistry. This chapter investigates the properties and reactions of thiols and sulphides within the context of new instrumental techniques. Relevant existing literature on these compounds is summarized. The chapter then discusses the properties of thiols and sulphides, and describes the different ways of preparing arenethiols. Thiolesters, their structure, and synthesis are outlined. The various reactions of thiols are stated. The chapter then explains the protection of the SH group in synthesis by discussing the several strategies depending on the stage of synthesis. It also focuses on saturated alkyl, aryl, and diaryl sulphides detailing the different methods of preparing sulphides. The chapter discusses the various reactions of sulphides, selenides, and their analogues. The synthetic uses of sulphides are briefly outlined. The compatibility of thiocetals and related compounds are provided and the method of preparation of unsaturated sulphides and their synthetic uses are discussed.
