Abstract
This chapter discusses education for industrial skill. Training for industry has evolved mainly through apprenticeship. This is a sort of contractual relationship between an employer, or master, and his employee, or apprentice, in which the master undertakes to engage the apprentice on agreed terms for a stated number of years and to be responsible for his training, while the apprentice promises to serve the master loyally during the period. Trainees are generally beginners in non-manual occupations; however, the term is also used for intending craftsmen in government training centers and for craftsmen re-training for other crafts. A self-contained full-time course lasting for 8 weeks or less is called short full-time. Release for such a course can be regarded as a form of block release. The main aim of an operatives' course is to impart a deeper understanding of the principles underlying the daily jobs and a wider knowledge of the processes of the industry as a whole.
