Abstract

Key factors like population explosion, globalization, and industrialization lead to the overconsumption of fossil fuels, minerals, and ecosystem contamination. Degradation of aquatic ecosystems is a major environmental concern. The restoration of these sites contaminated with pesticides, heavy metals, and other pollutants by using aquatic macrophytes is a promising technique and is commonly popularized as rhizofiltration. Rhizofiltration, a subset of phytoremediation is cost-effective, nature-friendly, solar energy driven, and effective at sequestering chemicals. Rhizofiltration efficiency in the removal of contaminants is contingent upon pH, temperature, hydraulic retention time, availability of plant nutrients on the polluted sites, and other variables.
